There are numerous retreat centres located throughout Himachal Pradesh, India and the World and they still prove to be tremendous benefit to even more numerous beings. Tsopema (or Riwalsar as known in Hindi), is an astounding little village surrounding a lake within the mountains. There are a number of very sacred caves associated with Guru Padmasambava and a very unique natural formation of the land making Tsopema a very special site. Guru Rinpoche had remarked that Tsopema is (a very special place) after practising there while on his journey to Mt Kailash (Kang Rinpoche). Some even believe that Tsopema itself is one of Guru Rinpoche’s hidden teachings (therma). Tsopema is a very auspicious place for an authentic retreat centre and will, too, prove to be of benefit to numerous sentient beings.
Mandavara Retreat Centre
Tsopema has numerous caves in which many nuns and some monks retreat for many years. Unfortunately, until now there is no availability for foreigners to do the same, due to lack of facilities and Indian permits, yet a place as holy as this should have these allowances. It is in this light that Venerable Ontul Rinpoche has decided to build a long-term retreat centre and monastery (Gompa) specifically catering to the practise of Tibetan Buddhism with the foresight of helping sentient beings.
At first the centre will cater for ten retreatents surrounding a Gompa.
Specific Focus of MRC
The previsions for retreat centres not only for young, healthy and vibrant practitioners but also for the elderly in need of limited support such as a hospice is highly lacking world-wide. With this in mind Ontul Rinpoche has since chosen to cater for these needs and build a retreat centre with a hospice.
• To run yearly retreat programs for people specifically interested in Tibetan Buddhism practise with respect to preparation for death, Bardo and next life.
• To run yearly programs for people specifically interested in Tibetan Buddhism practise with respect to Dzogchen and Mahamudra.
• To provide a long-term retreat facility with the ability for seclusion from others whereby one may do one’s own practise.
• To provide a supported long-term retreat facility i.e. with the ability to have food and medication brought to one as necessary. Together with the availability to mingle with others in a limited capacity.
• To provide a hospice whereby those with specific medical needs can be looked after and local community benefited.
Volunteers and local caring education
Since the hospice is a major focus on this project, there will be the opportunity for travelling doctors, nurses and assistants to work voluntarily abroad while soaking up the benefits Tsopema has to offer. In the same time disadvantaged local people (known as the untouchables) will be educated on how to care for others and be able to provide support to those in need.
How you can help and how much is needed to realise this project
Land and permissions have already been acquired and the site is designed. Now donations and funds are required to see the project building underway. Your donations will go towards the construction of the retreat centre and hospice at first then towards the training of the underprivileged to learn how to care for others.
Any and all donations are always humbly and gratefully accepted and they always take us one step closer to realisation. Saying that, a total of $14,000 U.S. dollars only is needed for this project.
Looking to the future
The incredible location where the retreat centre is to be, is an island right besides Mandavara lake in the valley only 1 km down from Guru Rinpoche’s caves.
At some stage in the future Ontul Rinpoche
hopes to be able to expand the centre by acquiring the surrounding land
and hence be able to provide the same facility for 20 to 30 more people.
